Using an intelligent reverse proxy outside the firewall that will proxy the content from the Liferay servers will make it possible to host Liferay on the intranet inside the firewall.
That reverse proxy should be able to do URL/Javascript rewriting of content sent form the Liferay servers. I dont know of OSS or freeware that can do it for Liferay.

There is a new OSS effort to port some of the SRA features from
OpenPortal to do exactly just that, but it isn't limited to Liferay. It
should work on any web server (Glassfish, Tomcat, etc.).
