Hi,

We have our current portal applications hosted in LR 5.1.5 version.
We are planning to upgrade the app. to LR 5.2.5 version.

So when we tried to export the LAR files of organizations from 5.1.5 version and tried importing it in 5.2.5 version; then we are getting an error saying the operation failed.

Is the .LAR files incompatible between different LR versions.

Any suggestions if there is any workaround here?

I think that were changes ot the database schema that would affect that. Try this...

Grab a copy of your database
Put it on another server
Set a test copy of Liferay 5.2.5 to talk to that
Start Liferay and go through the database updates

Then try to export and import the LAR files..

See if that works for you.

LAR files are incompatible between different LR versions. LARs create in one version of Liferay cannot be imported into a different version of Liferay.

If you need to upgrade your site, please refer to the Upgrade instructions

hi,

i just do some experiment to my portal(LR 511). what i did is import article using LAR from LR 511 to LR 526

1. got error cause diff build number
2. then i just edit manifest.xml in LAR file to build-number="5203"
3. and compress again as zip & rename to *.lar.
4. then i import to LR 526

so far it just working fine but im not sure in future. i want to do some more test so i can proceed this method to production.

please advice.
thanks.

This also works with 5.2 to 6.0 and 6.0.5 but ONLY in some cases like importing only few articles without tags / categories. You sholud not rely on this method if you're importing business data.

The portal itself is designed to upgrade an old copy of db. As stated previously, if you point the new portal at the db + repository of an old version the upgrade should be automatic.

Note, allways backup your data. emoticon

Hi Andreas,

Our company is actively doing migration of portals developed using a older version of liferay to the latest version. As most of the time, it is not direct one to one export / import of LAR files or running the upgrade scripts. There are so many things involved in the whole migration process which i am in the process of documenting and publishing soon.

If you can send across what exactly the kind of problem that you are facing then we can give you a proper solution / answer.
