Hi All,

Liferay held its annual East Coast Symposium last week. We had a good turnout and had several community-oriented discussions. Szymon from eo Networks and Artur from Vaadin were chosen as speakers from the community, and gave excellent presentations, and we had thoughtful discussions afterward on a range of topics. One of the things we talked about was getting the community more involved in the upcoming 6.1 CE release, more so than we had for the 6.0.6 CE release.

So to that end I'm going to organize two things in advance of the 6.1 release later this summer -

1. BugSquad - this will be a volunteer effort to get an early copy of 6.1 and root out bugs (as compared to the latest 6.0 EE release) before ship. Not necessarily fixing said bugs, but finding them and documenting them for the Liferay QA folks triage and potentially fix before ship. Of course any diagnosis and/or fixes are, as always, highly appreciated! This would involve testing the 6.1 CE release candidate vs. the latest 6.0 EE release, documenting any issues (especially in areas where our automated tests are weak or non-existant), and in general keeping our release quality high.

2. Community Verifier Program. I alluded to this in a blog post a while back, and now that the website and JIRA upgrades are complete, we are at a point where we can implement this. This program gives you additional rights in JIRA to join the Liferay engineering team to "clean up" the set of bugs already present in advance of the 6.1 release. The main goal here is to look at existing reported bugs, triage them to determine if it still exists in the latest 6.0 release, and if so, judge whether the severity is accurate, and update the fields (affected version, labels, categorization, description, etc) as necessary. More importantly, if the bug no longer exists, you can recommend closure and update the bug to denote which release it was fixed in (probably 6.0). There will be standardized text to use for various cases that we have developed for use. The JIRA rights are already set up, all we need are volunteers!

If you're interested in participating, please let me know via this thread. This time, instead of prizes, every volunteer will get something, including recognition on the website and elevated JIRA rights for #2 (those rights will extend beyond the 6.1 release!).

What's the difference between the "early copy of 6.1" and the one in the svn trunk?

Would also appreciate if you can set up some planned time schedule for the release.

Not much - but on the day we "cut" a copy of trunk, it becomes the release candidate against which we test, while trunk continues to evolve. So from that point on, the version that is tested by BugSquad is different from trunk.

Would also appreciate if you can set up some planned time schedule for the release.

Yes, this will definitely be done the moment we nail down a final date for getting the release done. But things are still a little "up in the air" due to schedule and resource changes (internally).

Would you be willing and able to assist in either or both of these efforts? Your contributions to date have been very well received (thank you!!) and I think you could really help us get this release out and with better quality.

Hi James,

I offer my help on this, don't mind to be in BugSquad or Community verifier program (I like "digging" in source code so if I could play a role between #1 and #2 it could be perfect).

Great, thanks to all our volunteers so far! I will give it 2 more days, and then we'll have a meeting (most likely over skype) for those that can make it to discuss how we will proceed and get to know each other. I'll take notes (heck I might just record the call). Looking forward to it!

Ok here is who I have so far. I will be setting up a separate forum for these programs and making the initial instructions and such there in the next couple of days.

Keep in mind that the BugSquad is just for 6.1 and ends once it is released (we'll likely have more for future releases!). I guesstimate that the first release candidate will be in late July or early August. More information available as the project progresses.

Nope, that's the latest and greatest as far as I know. I have been monitoring some of the bugs and noticed that the total number of bugs filed against 6.1 has only gone up in the last few weeks. I hope that the bugsquad and community verifiers can help wade through those bugs and get them to the people that can fix them quickly. It would be nice to get 6.1 out. I can't wait emoticon

As a side note, James. Did you get me for the community verifiers as well? I know you caught me for the bug squad at least. Thanks!

James,

I don't know if this idea I have would necessarily be part of this upcoming task, but perhaps you guys could organize some sort of community project to submit javadoc once you get close to the code freeze for the next release...

I mean, if a bunch of the community members joined in and added javadoc to even half of the class files, that's a big step away from where it is now.

Ideally we'd like to get all the code documented, then you guys would just need to keep it up to date as you went forward, but that might be an unrealistic goal...

Just finishing up another installation and I have some time now. Sign me up for BugSquad and Community Verifier Program.

It sure is difficult to setup Liferay in production when an application bundle standalone installation is so easy to install and use -
just downloading and extracting a file is not enough. It's necessary to setup backup/recovery, set to use ntp servers, etc... emoticon

We had a google summer of code project to create an easier to use installer to be able to deploy to existing environments. But we were rejected this year emoticon Next year though!

FYI I created a project landing page and a JIRA Dashboard to track our BugSquad activities. For those that recently joined, we are wrapping up the ALPHA test tomorrow and moving on to the BETA test for Liferay 6.1 CE next week.

Please test with latest sources. Some changes has been made since RC1.

Other thing to investigate: Perhaps you should change some of the config for DLStore properties in portal-ext.properties. There are some logs when upgrading saying that AFAIK.
