I'm sort of using some of the so-portlet stuff in the regular version of LR. I'm wondering if there's a way I can have both the SO version of my communities as well as the old version in LR. Can anyone point me in the right direction here?

Jeff, by design the SO version of communities overrides the base version. If you want to use both... I imagine you'd have to replicate the portlet somehow. But that will lead to major future compatibility issues.
