Mutiple portal instance domain names issue

I created a portal instance with www.example.com as domain name ,then I tried to apply the same domain name to virtual host name under community settings tab,when i try to save it says the virtual host name has to be unique .Is it bcos I already used the domain name in portal instance option ? Any reason for this behavior

I am trying to give the same domain name to the guest community under virtual host(communtiy) option to avoid having /web in friendly URL at the same time I am using the multiple portal instance option too
