I just finished the training about 2 weeks ago in Santa Clara, CA. Read the list of course topics, that's pretty much what we followed. It's really a mix of setting up Liferay, administrating it, simple content management, layout of the development environment, development of extensions, modifications and addons to the Liferay core using the \ext environment. Basics of using the plugin setup to include external portlets (not portlet development, not the thrust of this class). Modifying themes, layouts, a little bit on WSRP, a number of sample and example sites built with Liferay, a little bit on heavier content management with Alfresco and more.
It's a solid 4-days of brain cramming. I thought I could possibly pick up this stuff on my own, but I got sooooo much more out of the training. There's a lot of complexity to Liferay that you can't see by simply kicking the tires, opening the doors and looking under the hood (to quote the "buying a car" analogy). You've got to get some working knowledge of its innards. The training is the only way to get that. Yes, like any complex product, Liferay has it's share of quirks and bugs. I spent probably 4-5 hours yesterday trying to figure something out and it turns out it's a known bug/problem with 5.0.1. I'm just going thru the training materials again filling in the gaps/examples we skipped/glossed over. By digging around in the code, I've getting a much better feeling for what's going on.
I need to come up with a little demo for my project and hopefully that'll get us a go ahead for a larger project !!
Now if I can only figure out how to convert an existing Struts/servlet window into a portlet ......
