Exporting/Importing Custom Fields

I'm looking for the best way to migrate custom fields from a development system to a production system. Is there a way to export from one and import into the other? I want to avoid having to re-enter the field definitions from scratch.

The suggested way is to setup staging between development server and production server.

Unfortunately, there's currently a bug in CE version and expando fields are not imported to a production server. It's already fixed in the svn trunk and should be OK in the new CE release planned near the end of this month.

Forgive me for being blunt, but:
I don't like the idea of reviving years old threads to promote his own portlet which he has put on the marketplace...
Just my 2 cents.
