First of all " A warm welcome to liferay family". I would suggest you to go with documents provided.
Read it carefully and follow the steps.. anyway every of us are there to back you up if get stuck some where.

First check out below link.

Then go through User Guide of Liferay by which you'll get idea what all are the functionality exist in Liferay and how its working. Now if you feel you are comfortable with Liferay then go with Development Guide which will help you start developing in Liferay.

There many books available for Liferay Beginners you can refer that as well.
