We're pleased to announce Liferay Sync 1.0.10 beta is available for Linux. Subscribe to this thread to be notified of future releases of Liferay Sync for Linux.

Please note the Linux versions are still experimental. Post any issues you encounter directly on this forum and attach your logs (found in ~/.liferay-sync/logs/liferay-sync.log).

Also, if you're running Ubuntu, non-Unity tray icons are disabled by default. To enable the tray icon, follow the instructions here: link. Instead of 'all', you can also just add 'SWT' to the whitelist.

Update: Apr 23, 2013

You can now download the Linux versions directly on the Liferay Sync download page: link. Release notes are available on the download page.

Update: Mar 26, 2013

This update contains several fixes including:
- Added: RPM package now available
- Added hi-res tray icons
- Fixed: DuplicateFileException errors on Linux
- Fixed: NullPointerException logs on Linux
- Fixed: Missing tray icons for certain Linux distros (like Fedora)
- Other small bug fixes.

That's great! I'm using mac nowadays but this announcement is another stimulus to switch back to Linux.

It did not seem related to Juan's.

Thanks again,

Hi,

1. Upon first start: I receive:
13 Mar 2013 16:52:10,350 ERROR [PropertiesWindowHandler:107] Unsupported operating system
java.io.IOException: Unsupported operating system
at com.liferay.sync.gui.desktop.util.DesktopUtil.getApplicationPath(DesktopUtil.java:68)

Ubuntu 12.04 64bit - 3.2.0-38-generic

2. I experience the uploading issue as well. [JSONWebServiceServiceAction:114]
3. After the first setup there is no GUI way to modify the settings.
4. There is no GUI way to stop the service.
5. I think it would be a quite basic feature to have a checkbox to launch sync upon opsystem startup

Shall I open a ticket in Jira or the posts are fine here?

Cheers, Adam

So I just tested the beta on Ubuntu 64-bit, and it seems the tray icon doesn't appear on the 64-bit version of Ubuntu (works fine in 32-bit). The "Unsupported operating system" error relates to the checkbox to launch Sync on startup. We haven't yet implemented a "start on launch" option for Linux (particularly since different distros handle it differently).

We'll need to research why the tray item doesn't appear on Ubuntu 64-bit (it's most likely specific to Unity).

I take that back. I forgot I had to add Sync to the system try whitelist for Ubuntu. Please see instructions here: link

I have used Liferay Sync on Linux and this working properly. However, if local directory is a symbolic link, then Liferay Sync seems ignoring this.

Any chance we can make Liferay Sync to follow symbol link (and avoid looping for sure) as this is very useful, thanks.

Hi James,

You can uninstall on Ubuntu calling "sudo apt-get remove liferaysync".

Hi Thomas,

Can you elaborate on your use case for using symlinks?

Thanks,
Dennis

Dear Dennis,

Thanks for asking. I have one Liferay site and one document server. There are about 100 directories in document server but I only need to sync 30 of these directories to Liferay. In order to select those 30 directories, I have created 30 symbolic link inside liferay-sync/portal to link to their destinations. However Liferay Sync just ignore those symbol link (I have checked the security level and it is ok).

On the other hand, if I create a symbol link for liferay-sync so that the liferay-sync/portal directory is already jumped to symbolic link, Liferay Sync can work properly. However, I cannot selectively sync those directories I want.

Thanks for help in advance.

Regards,
Thomas

Hi Thomas,

I can see the use case for allowing symlinking, but we will need to continue evaluating the feature. Some concerns are 1) it opens the ability to sync entire hard drives by symlinking to a root folder which can be overly taxing on Sync, 2) Windows can't benefit from symlinking, 3) future integration with Finder/Nautilus can present UX challenges.

Hi Dominique,

I think I know what the issue is. Can you zip up and send me your logs found in ~/.liferay-sync/logs so I can confirm the issue? You can email me at dennis.ju@liferay.com
