How to do Editable liferay search container?

Hi All,
I am new to liferay development.i have done good work to display the liferay grid by using liferay search container.But now the requirement is some of the fields in the grid has provision to modify by user.Is it possible to liferay search container or do i follow any other approach to achieve editable liferay grid?.

Use preferences as a configuration and read those preferences while rendering search container .
In case if you want to modify any of the existing feature and want to make it as configurable then create a hook and read your portlet preferences in hook.
