Social Office - friends and contacts

Can someone help me understand the concept of friends and contacts in Social Office?

I undertood from another forum post that contacts are auto added based on other members of sites that I also join. But there is also an explicit "Add Contact" option. Can I search for and add another community member here via screen name, name,... ?

Does this then affect chat also?
Regarding the "My friends" section in the "Activities" area- is this the contacts you explicitly added above?
