Creating Content with Liferay

Day 1

Prior to the start of the course, you will be asked to take part in a brief online course called Introduction to Liferay that consists of three videos. These three videos are the foundation for the Creating Content with Liferay training.

The first day begins with installing Liferay Portal Enterprise Edition. It is this installation of Liferay that will be used for the rest of the course. After this, you'll dive into site management tasks that may be delegated to Content Creators. These include creating and managing page templates and site templates. You'll also learn how pages can be configured to allow certain users to have the ability to modify only parts of the page, while still retaining full control over other parts.

Before digging too deeply into Liferay's advanced content features, we'll take some time to introduce Liferay's Web Content Management System with some basic examples. You'll learn how you can use the rich text editor to create unstructured content and how you can use the Web Content Display portlet to display web content.

Once you have a good handle on the basics, we'll dig into Liferay's Asset Framework. You'll learn how all assets in Liferay share a common set of features that we can use to create complex, data rich sites that are still intuitive and easy to navigate. We'll explore how tagging and categorizing our content will help to expose the data to our end users. We'll also learn how features such as comments and ratings can help to create interactive sites that encourage collaboration. Lastly, we learn how site members can use Flags to inform administrators of any inappropriate content on the site.

The first day is rounded out by a focus on document and media management. You will learn how to use the Document and Media Library portlets to store assets you can use in your web content or that you want your users to be able to view and download. You'll be able to configure Liferay's Document and Media portlet to convert various file formats whenever desired, and you will examine how the permissions system works with the Document Library.

By the end of the first day, you will have a firm understanding of the building blocks of managing content in Liferay.

Day 2

On public facing sites that provide a significant amount of content, one of the primary concerns is the accuracy of the content that is published. Day 2 begins with a discussion of Liferay's workflow and how workflow can help to ensure that content is reviewed before being published. Liferay Enterprise Edition provides a graphical editor for creating complex workflows and we'll be using this editor to create a workflow for our site.

Next, we'll return to Liferay's Web Content Management system and take a much deeper dive into the power of Structures and Templates. You'll learn how to create dynamic content and how to leverage data in the request to provide content that is more relevant to the user that is currently logged in. You'll also learn how Liferay's Web Content Templates can access Liferay's Services to expose Liferay data in web content and explore how the Web Content Search and Web Content List portlets can make it easier for users to find the web content you're creating.

In addition to the display portlets already discussed, Liferay provides a very powerful, but often overlooked portlet called Asset Publisher that we'll be discussing next. Asset Publisher is highly configurable and can work alongside several other portlets and features in Liferay to make very intuitive and highly navigable pages that can unlock the content that you've worked so hard to create.

Lastly, we'll be exploring how Liferay's staging system can be used to allow you to develop your content in a staged environment before publishing it to a live environment. In addition to simple Local Live and Remote Live staging options we'll be exploring how branching and versioning can be used to enable complex publishing processes.

At the end of the second day, we will take some time to review all of the tools and features that we have used, and spend a few minutes discussing best practices for creating and managing content in Liferay.
