Sun vs. Liferay / Preferences vs. Configuration

... according to sun, there should be a view/edit/help portlet.
The edit portlet should be used for preferences...

but Instead I find in most portlets (except the sun portlets)
something like configuration instead. Is this a better approach?

Should we use both?
What is the default for Liferay?
Any suggestions/best practices?

The portlet spec says the portlet would have the view, edit and help modes.

When a JSR 168/286 portlet (eg. Notepad portlet on POR) is deployed on a SUN Portal, you would see the edit and help buttons on every portlet.
When you deploy the same portlet on LR Portal, then you would see it as Preferences and Help links on every portlet.
So there is no difference between the two.

The "configuration" is a LR add-on, which gives option about Look and feel, roles and permissions etc.
