The rating component is not tightly coupled with anything, so it can be used to rate default Liferay objects or even your own assets.
Disabling self-rating may impose some coupling to assets that may not be desirable.
In the end, you can give yourself a high rating. It will skew the average when there are few other ratings, but if you get a lot of 1 ratings it doesn't matter what you might give yourself, the numbers will correct themselves.
