How is paging handled on Message Boards? What's max # shown?

I'm trying to put a custom version of the page_comments portlet on my page (without the thread view), and I don't see any way of handling paging in the <discussions> tag which is used in the portlet.
I also don't see and max-visible settings. Is this supposed to be handled by the database (only a certain # of MBMessages can be in one thread)?

I can implement my own paging, but I wanted to see if I was missing something first.

I have the same problem with Message Boards - paging is absent. Why? Is there unreal situation with 100+ replies within one topic? It is very unusual way to represent all replies in one page - as result slow page loading and high traffic usage.
