Document & Media portlet performance issue

Dear Friends,

I have a requirement to store all the PDF/excel files into document & media portlet.

My question is if i am storing the large amount of PDF/Excel/Word files into application server , then it will lead to performance issue?

if yes ,Please give any other solution....
