Hi,
i'm also a Liferay beginner, i think i was.

The best way to start with a software is to try it, i mean if u have a minimum knowledge of system administration and java EE development, you r ready to go with Liferay, try to do a manual install in an existing server to face the installation problems, start here.
Always refer to the forum, you will always find someone ho share the same issue, and certainly there is always someone ho answer you and help you.
After all, like previous answer, documentation is very nice and there is many scenario of Liferay using, and it cover all (70% ) the use cases u can think about.
