Liferay Components Configuration management

We are working on a lot of OOTB LIferay components like structures and templates. Wanted to understand what is best way to maintain configuration management for this.

One way is to export the templates and structures as lar files and check in version control system like svn / github etc. Looks like this has few issues. Please help us with best approach to achieve this.
