Apache or Tomcat

Hello,

I want to know if it is better to use Tomcat or Apache+Tomcat for running Liferay portal for about 100,000 users.

Obviously apache + tomcat, especially for offloading static file access.

The control you gain having Apache in front of Tomcat is enormous. I use mod_jk to connect the two.

- ssl certs in Apache
- managing 'system undergoing maintenance' messages
- delivering static files only thru apache (like robots.txt, mass mail links to static files at the same domain as that for a liferay virtualhost)
- load balancing
- rewrites for vanity urls
- and much more

number of users is not relevant in my mind
