Hi, i'm sorry if this is the wrong position, but i've created this thread becouse i can help you to made a better translation of liferay portal. I think that at the moment the translation are done using same software translation but the result is not very good.

For example in the mb portlet theread or post, are translated and it's really orrible emoticon

, often also the "person" is moved from first to third.

Hi Manuel,

Thanks for your offering. Helping improve the translation is very
easy. All you have to do it get a copy of the
Language_it.properties.native file from subversion and review the
messages found in it. Once it's done create a new issue to
support.liferay.com and upload the improved file there.

If you're fast enough it'll be included in the upcoming 5.0.

It's in QA. A release candidate could be released any day this week. In the worst case I think it would be released next week.

Hi Manuel,

I started two days ago to translate Language_it.properties* files for Liferay 5.1.0.
I'm developing 2 community sites for a customer and I patch the sentences when I find mistakes in translation.
As a matter of fact, is very hard for a Community Owner/Administrator to easily manage portal and portlet options if these are unmeaningful...

I don't know if you applied yourself to this task until now, but - if you want - we can share this job.
There are more than 3900 sentences to translate and quite the 70% needs a better translation!

Se vuoi ti allego i miei file così puoi partire da li se ti può
avvantaggiare, il problema risiede tuttavia nel fatto che sicuramente con la
nuova versione avranno inserito nuove voci nel file di language, pertanto
potrebbe essere necessario fare un merge tra le versioni inclesi per poi
proseguire con la traduzione.

Io per questa attivita usavo notepad++ con l'opzione "cambia vista" attivato
che mette due file visualizzati uno accanto all'altro in modo da avere la
versione inglese e scrivere quella in italiano.
Per quanto riguarda il merge puoi usare diversi tools gratuiti che ti
possono far risparmiare tempo, io utilizzo una funzionalita di un software
di versionamento che utilizzo.

In allegato pertanto trovi la versione inglese ed italiana, mi pare di
averlo tradotto quasi tutto almeno un 90% ma a questo punto meglio se fai
una verifica.

...sorry for firing on all channels - do you mean like in LPS-256? This is only half a german translation overhaul, but I feel that time is wasted given that this stayed uncommented by anyone for quite some time. I'd feel better if there was at least some feedback.

btw. there is also some funny content in the german localization on liferay.com (in the content sections) - who'd care about this? Most notably the main navigation areas (visible on every single page) are "Produkts, Services, Partners, Gemeinschaft, Documentation, Downloads" but should read "Produkte, Service, Partner, Gemeinschaft, Dokumentation, Download". This is additional to the horrible translation in the portal itself.

Maybe it is very wrong to kick such an old topic like this, but the translation problem is also present in the Dutch language. The Dock (I hope this is the right name for the thing on the right top in most themes) contains really hilarious translations, which makes the Dutch language version in fact useless (you just can't deliver something like that to customers). If there is no volunteer yet, and there is interest, I can try to make some time in order to fix the worst translations issues in the Dutch version.

There's a translation category in this forum - you should announce your work there and then proceed. Remember to work on the Language_nl.properties.native and preferably send in a svn patch - it's easier for the people committing to merge this with the version control file, as this may continue to evolve between your start-of-work and the commit time. If the dutch translation is as the german version was half a year ago, you'll get some laugh out of it :-) (no pun intended - machine translation is sometimes really funny)
