I've installed Liferay 6.0.6 and Liferay 6.1.0 beta 3 on jelastic.servint.net.
I can display 6.0.6 as usual but 6.1.0 seems very slow. Is there any other people facing a similar performance issue with 6.1.0 beta3?

Hi Hitoshi,

I've also faced the same.
And even it's taking lot more time in startup for me.

Ah, interesting. I have been noticing very slow start up but was assuming it was because of running with the IDE a couple of developing themes and the rest. However, reading this post I did some comparisons and with 6.0 I am seeing start up times (including deploying my themes from the SDK and so on) of around 90,000 ms - but on 6.1 it is kicking in around 200,000 ms

I have been trying to read through the console during start up to see if there is anything in particular that seems to be holding things up but I can spot anything specific - though the open social portlet seems to take sometime to load.

On actual use I am not in a position to judge as I am using this on a local machine with only 2gig of ram, so it is hardly running at lightning speed anyway! I don't know if there have been any performance improvement between Beta 3 and the upcoming (I hope!) GA.

Yes, we noticed a bug performance drop with Asset Publisher. More about this you can read here, here and here. We also filled issue LPS-22332

Hi Hitoshi

I have just set up my own on Jelastic with mysql and 6.1 is certainly running very slowly

Though I have no idea of telling whether this is something to do with 6.1 or whether it is something to do with Jelastic being still in beta.

Hi Szymon, I see your point about huge queries for small result.

In my slow installation this is just a blank installation - nobody there but Liferay! So I am assuming this is not an asset problem, at least not in the same way. Though could there be a connection? I mean that not only is it making more calls to the database than required, but it is also running slowly? Two problems rather than one being the symptom of another.

Hey guys,

What's different about this release (6.1) from the past is that we're trying to push out many more beta releases. We're going to have another beta 4 released later today with the aim of making the product more stable as we march toward a RC (end of November), and then a GA (December).

After this beta 4, we'll start focusing on performance for the RC and then the GA. It's definitely on our view. I've been bugging our team like crazy about making 6.1 snappier. But we didn't want to shift focus away from stabilization.

So, stabilization, then performance.

Snappy good. Slow bad.

Thx guys!

As Joss replied, performance was this slow even on a clean installation using the war file without anything else. As Tejas pointed out, the start up was slower too. It's was taking so long just to change the default test user password.
Even more, as you can see, I've added some demo pages and communities on 6.0.6 so it should be slower.

I don't think it's the jelastic site problem because 6.0.6 is coming up quicker and I'm not having too much performance problem with it.

As I was setting this up, I noticed that the size of portal-service.jar has become very large.
The CPU, and memory stats seems to be similar for 6.0.6 and 6.1.0. I can even say 6.1.0 is actually using less memory.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I'm sure Liferay will be able to tune it to have better performance. Will be looking forward to it.
Just was a little concerned with all the new features being added,

I ramped up the Cloudlets to their maximum on Jelastic which gives, I think, about 16 X 128 mb ram ....er ... 2048. But it said it was only using 7 out of the 16 available cloudlets, so I am assuming it was happy at that level.

I have installed another clean version locally using xampp for the mysql - my machine is running windows7 32bit with 2 gig of ram and a big processor. That seems to be running faster than the Jelastic version, but it still starts up slower than an older version I have installed.

Sorry, I really am very non-technical (writer composer, not programmer) so I am not the person to try and benchmark this!

I've also installed earlier revisions of 6.1.0 it on the local machine and didn't have too much performance issues.
I'm going to wait out on doing performance benchmark because as Brian replied, they're going to be working on it before the GA.

I just wanted to put it in attention that all these nice features and changes are beginning to push performance to intolerable level.

It might be worth you working out some benchmarking system in advance that you can then use to compare 6.0.6, 61 B1, B3 and the upcoming B4.

I would think Szymon will be doing likewise.

Though, from what Chan is saying above, the better comparison will probably be with RC1 and possibly a bit unfair on B4 since that will be the "feature complete" version rather than the tuned race car version....

Will wait, will see. For now we don't have any stress tests. We are just using Jmeter to test loading speed of various combinations of Asset Publisher.

First thing we need to have some kind of normative data that we will compare our results too. Question is what parameters should be check? Ram? Loading speed (of what exactly)? How many entries in AssetEntries table.

What is your proposal guys?

I can only go from a users perspective. So from my point of view, most users have very straight forward needs and they should be tested first.

The best way I can think of is to design a route through a site that a user might take. Here is a suggestion:

1. First Visit - clean cache, no cookies and so on. They have never been there before.

This would be basically front page load time; the front page being very much an advert for the company so possible lots of bits of information.

A list of 10 News articles with title and excerpt
A large banner with wording generated by Web Content
A list of 10 Most recent Blog posts
A list of 10 most recent Forum posts
A list of 10 most recent Wiki articles.

No click through to any information at this point - just viewing!

2. A single search using a term that brings up at least 50 results Paginated at, what 10 per page? Something fairly standard.

3. A standard registration procedure and first login.

4. Creating a personal site. So creating three pages with the standard Blog, Wiki, Webcontent.

5. Creating a blog post with image checking the load time of the editor, the load time of file manager and then saving the post.

6. Posting to a forum

7. Editing profile paying particular attention to the loading of the control panel - I have noticed that can be a little slow sometime, well on admin at least. And of course, saving of the profile and closing of the control panel.

8 Making a directory search or something from a large amount of data.

Maybe this is a bit un-benchmark like, but the success of the site is down to the perception of the user, not the numbers - if simple actions feel sluggish as user will get fed up very quickly. (Note: You will lose more users who are mildly irritated by something than if they are made angry. This is because mild irritants are often ignored in favour of the big issues, not realising that a user that is slowly irritated over a long period will probably never return once they go)

If a site feel sharp and reacts quickly and easily, the user does not even notice - they are immediately drawn to the information and do not even think about it. They will stay.

So, paying attention to how fast the control panel opens or how quick a search is, or how fast an editor opens, then trying to shave little bits of time off those processes will make a huge difference to the user once all added up.

More description:
1. This 10 News list should be Asset Publisher with one category Contains and one category Does Not Contain
2. Same page should be copied and testes as subpage in portal. In our test main page always had better timing than other pages (even at cold start). Its like its already in cache befeeore anyone click on it. So lets try both same looking pages.

Joss Sanglier:

2. A single search using a term that brings up at least 50 results Paginated at, what 10 per page? Something fairly standard.

We need at least 5000 web content. Half with word test and half without that word. Half of those with word test should have permission "Guest-view" disabled.

Especially web content panel and Site Pages panel as those are most used parts of Control Panel.

HI Hitoshi

Just going back to Jelastic, one little issue has come up. I was just unable to save an edit I did on portal-ext.properties.

Seems that my clean installation (no 7cogs) and mysql has used up my entire 1GB quota. This is the message I got back from support

"Have some info for you,
For beta-testing period we provide Hdd 1 Gb per environment,
We have checked your environment and figured out this information:
Folder /opt weights 644 Mb (there are tomcat with liferay), JVM weights approx 300 Mb, about 50 Mb are taken by Operation System.... actually you have 140 kb free (that is why you got message: Disk quota exceeded "

Thought I ought to put that in the mix

Yes, there's a 1GB limit per app server.

The restrictions are as follows:
3 environments per account
4 app servers per environment
16 cloudlets per app server
1 GB per app server

I knew that, but I hadn't realised how close I had got.

They have kindly increased my limit on that environment, though I will need to change liferay to beta 4 when it comes out.

They are also looking at a stats system since at the moment there is no way of telling how much space you have used.

Just for interest, how can I update the liferay install on the environment without deleting it and starting again? Just so I dont have to bug them again!

It is 1 gig per environment, by the way, not per app server.

Did you test your portlet locally before uploading to jelastic?
I had somebody else complaining about this too but when I looked at it, it seems the problem was his custom portlet, which didn't even deploy properly on a local machine.
