Document Library - add display order

Hi.

I'm fairly new to Liferay and very new to Java/Portlets, but not new to programming. I'm interested in adding functionality to the Document Library portlet to allow for sorting by different columns within the Doc Lib display. (For instance, my client wants to display the most recently added documents at the top of the document list, rather than always listing things alphabetically.) I don't know where to look to find out if this is on the product road map or if it has been suggested - any help would be appreciated. I also don't mind doing the work, but would need some suggestions.

I found the following in the Legacy area and it describes how to change the sort order to be createDate descending (which would satisfy my clients request), but I would much rather expand the portlet to allow the user to choose within the configuration of the portlet how the documents should display.

I think I saw a similar request before but I don't think anybody actually have done anything about it.
