Checking the duplicate value insertion in client side

Hi All

Supose i have inserted one field value into a database say firstname Bruno and we are inserting the same value ie Bruno into databse again , It will alert error message by the client side using javascript .

Duplicate value should not be inserted into database .

So whether it is possible in client side or not ? please answer.
