Best way to edit Ofice Documents

I want to edit MS Office Documents directly from the Media and Documents portlet. The available integration with MS Office is restricted to 32-bits versions of IE and MS Office, so this excludes quite some clients. What would be the best approach to achieve MS Office integration without these restrictions.
Some options I see:
- using webdav, but this requires extra development on the portlet webdavsystem documentation
- using Liferay Sync
- ????
