URL authentication on user creation

when creating a user, is it possible to have an email automatically sent to the user's email with a URL for authentication purposes?

I don't want to use password sent in plain text by email.

Yes. There's a checkbox about having strangers confirm account in the auth panel that enables this.

will they be able to create an account if their email is not in the Portal? I'd like to avoid that.

what I want to do is this:
- create an account with some email address
- have an email with URL sent to that email address

Yes, that's the "allow strangers to create accounts" checkbox.
