How open social gadget works?

I want to use an desktop application in my portal. Please explain me how can we use openSocal gadget and what kind of gadgets and how we use them with example other than todo list.

Also note that the OpenSocial Foundation closed last December and I don't see a bright future for it, but that's just my opinion. Several members continue on in W3C and may produce something like it in the future.
