We are wanting to change:

Threads to Topics
and Posts to Comments

Within the message boards anyone got any ideas on how I would go about making those changes?

Yep. You can do all of your changes in a custom language.properties file. No coding necessary.

As David replies, use hook to overwrite language_en.properties file. Be sure to overwrite the language_en.properties file and not the language.properties.
