In most of the cases we might not use all the features of the Portal, so based on the usage we could comment out unnecessary portlets form the portlet-custom.xml and liferay-portlet.xml.

We right now need to do this via manual editing of the above mentioned XML, just to avoid unnecessary errors that might come out when doing so can we include this as part of the Setup Wizard which will help us doing the same.

Something like we showing the Portlet Groups like Collaboration, Tools etc., and let the user select which one is required for his instance and unselect others, this will disable those portlets in the necessary XML files !!! Just a restart post this configuration!!!

Any other thoughts and ideas are welcome for further brainstorming.

Actually, better would be think what should be part of the Liferay core.

Liferay core should be small and most of the portlets should be submitted as plugins. Liferay is build for extension so that should not be a problem.
