Fundación Azkue is a non-profit organization that seeks to promote the Open Knowledge in Euskera: the distribution of information in Euskera such as music, movies, books, photos, scientific and historical data. Its goal is creating a wide network of teams that collaborate towards this goal. The board of Fundación Azkue is formed by several independent institutions: Diputación Foral de Bizkaia, Ayuntamiento de Bilbao, Euskaltzaindia, Basque Country University, University of Deusto.
Fundación Azkue decided to build a portal based on Liferay Portal Enterprise Edition as a means to allow people from educational environments and private companies or associates to work together and collaborate in developing content in Euskera to be published on the Internet.
Liferay is a great platform to achieve such goals thanks to its ability to create virtual communites with a few clicks and provide them with a variety of tools to share information such as the document library, blogs, wikis, and forums. Azkue also uses Liferay's social networking functionalities and its web content management capabilities.
