using pop3 protocol for mail portlet configuration

Hi,
I am trying to configure the mail portlet in liferay version4.3.3 but our mail server will not support IMAP protocol for sending/receiving mails.
Is that possible to configure the mail portlet using pop3 protocol.
I found a property in portal.properties file. here it is
pop.server.notifications.enabled=true
it seems like this is used for pop protocol.
( Even i tried in v5.1.1 using gmail account but in vain)
Because of this i am not able to send password while creating account.
Any one please help me in configuring the mail portlet
Thanks
Devaki
