What's the purpose of the Templates and Structure options in Portlets?

Assume this is a bonehead question, but here goes--Inside the portlet edit menu itself, it says "Structure: Default" and "Template: None".

What do these options give you? How would you create a template or structure that would be used here and what would the purpose be?

Currently to style portlets I am creating custom page layouts and adding classes to columns. Do these options allow an alternate way to do that?

Thanks!

It's possible to define fields you want to use on a page and also how they are displayed. Following online doc may give you some idea on what's possible.
