Use of Archive tab in Journal portlet configuration

i got a requirement like,i want to take the backup of older versions of JournalArticle in Journal portlet..

is there any approaches to achieve this.

And whats the use of the Archive tab in JournalArticle configuration.What type of functionality,it will give to us.
