Basic question: How do I place a checkbox in a datatable?

How do I add a checkbox into a datatable? It's not uncommon to place a checkbox in a table column, say, to indicate that an employee is a supervisor. It appears that instead the datatable model shows true or false, and the user has to double-click the cell, check what they want, and then click save. Perhaps I've missed something. Thanks.
