click event in vm files

Hello friends,
How can we perform any action on click event in liferay theme vm files.
Like i have a requirement to set a flag when user clicks a link and I am doing it in theme.
Any suggestions ?

The vm templates are just that - templates. They have html tags and all of those tags can be given classes/ids and even inline javascript code.
