Monday, May 5th: Liferay Speaks at CommunityOne

Liferay was asked to speak at this year's CommunityOne, a special day devoted to the Open Source community. CSA, Brian Chan gave a talk on Social Networking and how to implement a network using Liferay Portal.

Session Title: Building a Social Network with Liferay Portal

Session Abstract: The purpose of this session is to discuss the technical details of how to build a social network by using Liferay Portal. It also addresses the following questions:

• In which language or framework should widgets be written? This question is important, because it deals with knowing when to build a widget by using a JSR 286 portlet and when to do so by using just HTML and JavaScript™ technology. The presentation shows examples of both, highlighting the pros and cons of each.

• What is the role of OpenSocial in a Java™ technology-based portal?

• How do I scale massively the way Facebook and MySpace do? Both Facebook and MySpace are written in scripting languages that have inherent benefits that traditional Java technology-based portals lack. The session shows how to run Liferay Portal without using HTTP sessions, so that a deployer can scale the same way Facebook scales with PHP and MySpace scales with ColdFusion.

• How do I create a custom profile? To quickly build a social network for your unique subculture or market segment, you’ll need to be able to quickly extend Liferay’s user profile.

• How can I provide social networking as a service? Show me a real-world example!
