Liferay Names New CEO
Former Director of Business Development, Bryan Cheung, Takes Business Lead
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Liferay, provider of the world's leading enterprise-class, open source portal and content management system, announced that Bryan Cheung, the company's former Director of Business Development, has been named Chief Executive Officer. In his new role, Cheung will focus on strategic direction and expansion of Liferay Portal's US and international adoption. He continues to work alongside Liferay's creator and former CEO, Brian Chan, who now takes the title of Chief Software Architect to focus his leadership on Liferay's technological innovation.
Cheung is one of the original founding partners of Liferay, with an extensive background in both portal technology and professional services. Under his former role as Director of Business Development, Cheung helped build key business relationships with the substantial community of companies and individuals using Liferay in the U.S. and abroad. His efforts recently yielded a new German subsidiary created to meet the growing demand for Liferay professional services in Europe.
"Bryan has proven his effectiveness in directing many of the most critical business affairs of this company," said Brian Chan. "His work already encompassed many senior duties including alliances, business development and market strategy. Most importantly, Bryan and I share in Liferay's vision to make an impact on the world, and I believe he will be even more effective in doing so in his new role."
"Liferay has an amazing team of developers under Brian Chan's thought leadership, and this change will give him the freedom to focus on product development," said Cheung. "Meanwhile, we will continue to leverage our position as the open source portal leader to foster innovation and offer real value through our professional services team."
Cheung's appointment offers a fitting end to a year of significant organizational growth and development for Liferay. The company shifted from LLC to corporation status in 2006; it formalized its Germany subsidiary; it extended strategic alliances to include partners such as Alfresco and Virtuas Open Source Solutions, among others; and took its flagship product to version 4.2.
Bryan Cheung graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a Bachelor's in Computer Science.
