Liferay Certification Now Available!

Company Blogs September 4, 2013 By Jeffrey Handa Staff

If you’ve been around the Liferay community for any length of time you’ve probably heard some discussion about Liferay offering a certification.  It’s something that we’ve wanted to do for quite a while, but it’s also something that we wanted to do right.  For the last year we’ve been hard at work to make the Liferay Certification Program a reality, and today I am very happy to announce the immediate availability of the first certification offering: the Liferay Certified Professional Developer.

The Liferay Certification Program has been designed to give all members of the Liferay community the opportunity to demonstrate their expertise with Liferay Portal. The program will offer certifications targeted to the audiences who are involved in the deployment of a Liferay based portal solution. While this first offering is aimed at developers, we are working on future offerings for portal administrators, content specialists, and system administrators.

Why get certified?

As the popularity of Liferay Portal has continued to grow, the need for well-qualified and trained Liferay professionals has also escalated. A quick search for Liferay on any career website will uncover the need for Liferay professionals for projects around the globe. As the demand for Liferay expertise has grown, the supply of technology professionals with Liferay experience has also expanded. The Liferay Certification Program gives you an opportunity stand out and be recognized for the time and effort you have devoted to mastering Liferay and to differentiate yourself in the job market.

What can I expect?

The exam will contain 50 questions (true/false, multiple choice single answer, and multiple choice multiple answer) and must be completed in 90 minutes.  The passing score is 75%. Additional details and sample questions can be found in the Exam Blueprint.

How should I prepare?

Prior to sitting for the exam, it is recommended, but not required, that you attend Liferay Developer Training. This training will give you a very good basis to prepare for the certification exam. Questions will also draw from several other sources as well as knowledge that can only be obtained by actually developing solutions with Liferay Portal. Full details on this first exam can be found in the Preparing for the Exam section of the Liferay Certified Professional Developer page.

How do I register?

Liferay has partnered with Prometric to administer the exam. To locate a test center near you and register for the exam visit http://www.prometric.com/liferay.

If your question hasn’t been answered, please take a look at the Certification FAQ, or email us at certification@liferay.com.

Hi Zankar,

The exam topics are listed in the Exam Blueprint (http://www.liferay.com/services/certification/professional-developer#blueprint). It's broken down into primary topics with a percentage listed to give you an idea of how many questions you'll see from that topic. Below the primary topics you'll see some secondary topics that describe the knowledge covered in more detail. The Exam Blueprint can also be downloaded as a pdf from that same page.

Hi Muhammed,

Congratulations on passing the exam. Additional tracks will be based on Liferay 6.2 and will be released after Liferay Portal 6.2 is released. Once we have additional information available we'll be posting at http://www.liferay.com/certification.

Hi Jeff,

Any idea as to how long will it take to receive digital certificate after clearing the certification?
I cleared the exam on 19th but haven't got any certificate till now.
Posted on 9/26/13 10:23 PM.
They told me it will take 14 working days - approx 3 weeks. I cleared on 14th and haven't received it yet. Expecting the same in next 1 week.

Hi Tejas,

The badges aren't available yet, but you should be receiving information about accessing your logos and receiving your digital certificate.
Posted on 10/3/13 9:01 PM in reply to Tejas Kanani.
Thanks Jeff for the update.
Yes. I got the digital certificate but was not able to download the logos from given path as getting permission issue. I've already replied to Haeil for the same and should be fix soon.

Thanks,
Tejas

Hi, How long will it take for a newbie to prepare for it ?
Posted on 10/10/13 10:19 AM in reply to Brian Kim.
Hi Harry,

Are you just new to Liferay or also new to portlet development? Do you have Java experience? Servlet experience? Everyone is different, so I can't really give an estimate on how long it would take but I'd recommend that anyone start with a solid Java background, take the Liferay Developer Training, and then spend some time working on real-world Liferay projects.

Hi Jeffery,

I have Java development experience of around 5 years and would like to go for this certification. Apart from the developers training isn't any good source to prepare for this?
I have seen some documentation which covers topics for this exam, will it be enough or any book you recommend?

Thanks,
Harry

Certification is a welcome step for the Liferay community and Liferay development. It increases accessibility and makes it easier for developers understand and comply with testing and validation procedures. We at Elegant MicroWeb think that Prometric can bring trust and confidence to the process, and better accommodate candidate locations. Other industry certifications are already using Prometric so there is a reputation and certainty that will make candidates and the IT community more confident in the process.

I did Liferay training with Jeff for Portal Admin and Developer. Jeff is knowledgeable and an excellent teacher. If you are aiming for certification, I recommend you review what certification requires, and then go into dev training making sure to take good notes !

Hi Ram,

Not sure what you mean by grassing type offer but there is a promotion going on right that you may be eligible for. Refer to https://www.liferay.com/certification-promo to determine if you qualify and for details on when to expect your retake voucher. There is a 21-day waiting period before you'll be able to sit for the exam again.

Is it necessary to wait 21 days?
If i want to apply it again after 1-2 days.
Can i apply after 1-2 day as a fresh one.
