New Liferay Portal 6.1 EE Empowers Enterprise Business Users

Powerful content and document management combined with new power-user features extend enterprise capabilities

 

LOS ANGELES — (February 22, 2012) — Liferay, Inc., provider of the world's leading enterprise-class open source portal, announced today the general availability of Liferay Portal 6.1 Enterprise Edition (EE) for download. The latest version of Liferay's portal product is its richest yet, offering key usability enhancements that empower business and non-technical users to easily and effectively publish, organize, and access data and content, and quickly create applications to facilitate business processes online.

The new Liferay Portal 6.1 EE features extensive updates to existing web content and document management systems plus new capabilities that are designed to provide more power to end users. Extensive user interface updates will make document management more productive and intuitive, with desktop and mobile access, live previews, and integration to external enterprise document repositories. Liferay 6.1 EE also simplifies the development and maintenance of rich websites, with sophisticated page templates and multiple site and page version editing.

In addition, power users can easily create custom data lists and workflow-enabled forms, popular features for users to be productive creating online business processes without involving developers. The new release also integrates with Liferay Marketplace, which will allow administrators to find and install applications to extend functionality directly from the portal.  For advanced customization, Liferay Developer Studio integration reduces development costs and time to market.

Key themes and features in the new Liferay Portal 6.1 EE include:

Anytime Access to the Enterprise

·     New Liferay Sync: Document sharing becomes a seamless experience with online and offline synchronization to desktop and mobile devices.

·      Third-party Integration: Documents can be accessed in one place through enterprise integration with Documentum, SharePoint, and other popular third-party CMIS repositories.

Better, Easier Content Organization

·      Advanced Content Management: Drag-and-drop document and media libraries centralize and simplify content management.

Flexible Multi-User Publishing

·      User Customizable Sites: Administrators can now designate certain pages and sections of a page to be personalized by users.

·      Affiliated Sites Management: Liferay pages and websites maintain links to their original site templates, making it easier to propagate changes to associated sites and pages.  

      Enhanced Productivity

·      New Workflow and Forms Designers: Business users can use these powerful visual editors to create web forms and workflows interactively in the browser.

·      User Data Lists: Users can create custom lists online that can be tied to form submissions to model business processes such as inventory management, vacation requests, or sales order submissions.

Companies can create consistent and integrated experiences across web and mobile channels

LOS ANGELES – (May 26, 2015) – Liferay, Inc., which makes enterprise open source portal software, today announced the availability of Liferay Screens to help companies develop native apps for the iOS and Android platforms. With Liferay Screens, organizations can easily extend the reach of their websites, portals, and intranets to mobile devices, and maintain a consistent experience for its users across all channels.

The release is part of Liferay's larger push to provide a mobile platform for companies developing several native apps across business units. With this strategy, Liferay hopes to save companies time and money by making it easier for mobile apps to reuse core data and services. The platform also ensures that users encounter consistent data and processes—such as registration, login, activity history, or documents—regardless of which interfaces they use to interact with the company.

"The problem we're trying to solve for companies is, ‘how do we quickly build great mobile apps that integrate with the overall customer experience, while keeping development costs to a minimum?'" said Juan Fernandez, Product Manager at Liferay. "Companies have to respond to the mobile explosion, but they need to do so with a strategy. With Liferay Screens, you can develop high-quality, elegant mobile apps quickly without compromising on these long-term considerations."

Liferay Screens also helps make native apps more useful to business units by removing the requirement for apps to be re-coded when business requirements change. For example, without Liferay Screens, a Customer Satisfaction Survey App would need to be updated and re-submitted to app stores whenever survey questions were updated. With a Liferay Screens-powered app backed by Liferay Portal, business users could update the questions in the portal, which would dynamically update the questions in the mobile app. The form submission could even be configured to trigger a workflow, which can also be updated by business users.

For mobile app developers and systems integrators, Liferay Screens provides several benefits over standalone or third party app development toolkits:

  • Fully compatible with standard development tools for iOS and Android
  • Lowers learning curve for developing apps backed by reusable backend services
  • Helps developers comply with UX and Brand requirements using Screens Themes, which follow Apple and Google's design languages and allow for custom colors

Nomination to Board of Directors underscores Liferay's increased commitment to extensible, easier to manage software

LOS ANGELES – (February 18, 2015) – Liferay, Inc., which makes enterprise, open source portals, today announced that it is now a Strategic Member of the OSGi Alliance and has been voted a seat on the Board of Directors. The announcement comes during Liferay's second year as a member of the worldwide consortium of technology innovators and will give the company representation in both the operations and technical sides of the organization.

Liferay's Senior Software Architect Ray Augé was elected to the OSGi Alliance Board of Directors. Other companies represented on the Board include IBM, Oracle, Salesforce.com, NTT, Adobe, Paremus, ProSyst Software and Software AG. Augé was also selected to co-chair the Enterprise Expert Group, which defines the technical requirements and specifications needed to use the OSGi Service Platform in enterprise business scenarios.

Liferay's expanded role within the OSGi Alliance means greater influence over the direction of OSGi specifications to meet the needs of Liferay customers. The effort also falls in line with the company's long-term investment in modularity. First introduced into the product in Liferay Portal 6.2, OSGi is a framework for developing modular Java applications that will continue to be used and developed in future versions of the platform. Liferay believes the increased componentization of applications into software modules will mean greater value for Liferay users—it will simplify portal implementations, lead to an easier development process to quickly deliver new features, and reduce complexity for maintenance and upgrades.
