Switch database server to slave when master db fails

When Liferay is set to write to a master database and read from a slave, is it possible to switch to using only slave database when master database fails?

Just wondered reliability when using separate write and read databases.

Since there's no replies, will answer my own question. Use virtual IP and switch to one server on failure.
