It is totally *NOT* for EE. EE is not given away in any form.

EE does use and incorporate the CE code to a large extent, but EE will have ongoing code changes and fixes over the CE code that it tends to move farther away from the CE code every day.

CE you can download from the download area of liferay.com, or even from github.

EE you can only download from the customer portal area of liferay.com.

Otherwise I'm not sure what you're asking, how to differentiate between the two?

Fully agree with David. In addition:

On github you'll find the sourcecode for CE. Ultimately, this is also the basis for EE, though there might be more (or earlier) updates on EE. You can see the differences by just looking at the code: CE has the LGPL license headers while EE mentions a commercial license. This gives you another hint: If you're not an EE customer, you legitimately only have access to the CE sourcecode. If you're an EE customer you'll get a specific download link for the EE sourcecode.

Due to the support services that you'll buy with EE, you're not supposed to build Liferay from source anyway - it'd be hard to support variations and changed instances for our support, so the usage pattern is completely different. (Not that I advise to compile CE from source, let alone change it and try to maintain a branch - there's probably better use that you can make of your time)
