How Does sync work? ---Technical aspects

Liferay Sync is an excellent feature from liferay. Supporting mobile devices is another key step.

I want to understand the technical aspects of this "Sync" application. What is the communication methodology between client application (desktop/mobile) and server? Would like to get into details. Is there any Technical specifications available?

Want to understand the details of the integration possiblities, extending the native mobile application, standards of document sharing, security aspects, etc.

Appreciate if someone can respond quickly.

If i want to develop a native application on iPhone on using this Sync application, do we have any framework to work with Sync? Or should we directly work on files? If we have to directly work on files, is there any additional care to be taken w.r.t. sync limitations point of view?
