Hystrix & Liferay: Adding Fault Tolerance to System Integration*

Abdullah Bushnaq Lead Consultant Liferay

Session Summary

*This session recording is available as an audio file. "Play Video" will result in an mp3 download.

In complex applications, the number of services used can be pretty high and we can have multiple interdependencies between these services. The resiliency of these services is typically out of our control.

Netflix has designed a library called Hystrix which implements the Circuit Breaker pattern. It helps with the control of the interactions between services by adding latency tolerance and fault tolerance logic.

A Liferay implementation using Hystrix can improve application resilience, reducing your system failure due to external errors. It allows us to implement a proper fallback, configure timeouts and set thresholds specific to the environment.

Liferay has developed a proof of concept of Liferay and Hystrix integration. In this example, it is possible to see the results when a service fails, how Liferay responds through this scenario and how we can identify the point of failure quickly by observing the Hystrix dashboard.

Search: An Under-Appreciated Ingredient for Great User Experience

Jonas Choi Sales Engineer Liferay

Session Summary

With the sheer volume of content and information available to us today, Search is an underemphasized but critical part of modern user experience, for customers, partners, employees, and citizens. Getting search right avoids frustration and improves outcomes for digital interactions.

In this session, we will start by looking at market trends, including a shift to insight and figuring out what users need rather than just returning raw results. We’ll next look at how different use cases, from medical records to manufacturing logs to financial records, call for different ways of configuring and using search.

We will share how to make the most out of Liferay Search, including:

How to configure the engine appropriately for different use cases.
How to name assets and tag/categorize them to get search results that your users expect.
Customization options, including auto-tagging, custom facets, and extending Search

We will also present a demo of the key new Search-related capabilities in Liferay DXP 7.1:

Customizing the search results interface
Support for Elastic Search 6 and X-Pack in Liferay Enterprise Search
API and Search portlet improvements

Finally we will share a bit of the Product Roadmap.

Creating an Integrated Experience That Delights Customers

Case Study
Aubry Henkel Director, IS/IT/PMO EATELCORP, LLC
Matt Wolinski Senior Enterprise Architect XTIVIA, Inc.

Session Summary

This session will focus on the use case and architecture for a customer portal for Eatel, a Louisiana based telecommunications company that serves business and residential customers throughout the state. This dynamic and flexible portal allows customers to view, pay, and manage their telephony, internet and TV services, as well as data center accounts - all with the complexity of integrating with multiple systems including iCommv (a Telecom industry specific Operations Support System/Business Support System), Salesforce, Paymentus and more. In this implementation, XTIVIA leveraged Liferay DXP’s core features along with a modern React Single Page Application (SPA) architecture. Additionally, we used XTIVIA’s JetRay pattern and tooling to expedite Liferay-based React portlet development, JetService to quickly develop Liferay-based RESTful services, and XTIVIA’s Service Guard for DXP to secure restful APIs by integrating with Liferay’s Role Based Access Control (RBAC) infrastructure. For integration with the rest of the Enterprise systems, we leveraged Dell Boomi based RESTful services.

Liferay DXP Web Experience Management: Architecture, New Features, and Roadmap

Angelo Youn Product Manager Liferay

Session Summary

This session will provide an overview of Liferay DXP’s Web Experience Management features.

Architecture
Liferay DXP’s CMS will be moving to a de-coupled architecture, which means content can be authored and stored in Liferay DXP, and delivered either natively to Liferay DXP sites or via API to third-party sites and interfaces.

This will require well crafted APIs, which are currently being developed with compatibility for Liferay DXP 7.1.

New Features
Liferay DXP 7.1 also introduces several new features:
• Content Pages makes it easier for business users to assemble content-rich pages from Page Fragments defined by designers and built using standard HTML, CSS, and Javascript.
• Pages and Navigation are de-coupled in 7.1, allow for multiple navigation menus to exist on a site or page.
• Asset Display Pages will make it easier to display similar Assets in a single Content Page design.

Roadmap
We will conclude with the CMS roadmap, which includes:
• Improved architecture for Personalization
• Better support for Landing Pages for collecting personal data
• Additional improvements to Content Pages and Asset Display Pages
• Master Page Templates to address some of the shortcomings of Liferay Themes
• Rich libraries of Pages and Page Fragments for Business Users

The Liferay platform can be a powerful tool for customer and partner engagement, and a great customer experience can drive user satisfaction and metrics through the virtual roof. But before you can activate and incentivize your user base, you need to develop a “four dimensional” customer experience strategy: The two dimensions of a highly usable design, the third dimension of rich, personalized content, and the fourth dimension of dynamic interactions based on behavior and relationship. Using real-world examples from our large-scale financial services customer portal, we will explore and illustrate how to develop, design, and implement a dynamic CX system that can drive user engagement, inside sales metrics, training participation, and asset downloads.

Improved Developer Experience for DXP 7.1*

Gregory Amerson Software Architect Liferay

Session Summary

*This session recording is available as an audio file. "Play Video" will result in an mp3 download.

With Liferay DXP 7.0, an entirely new heterogenous development toolchain for Liferay projects called Liferay workspace was introduced. It supports OSGi modules, traditional WAR-style plugins as well as modern frontend based development for themes and NPM. However, along with so many new developer tools came a loss of productivity for those teams well-versed in Liferay 6.x style development. One of the main focuses for the developer tools team for 7.1 was improving the developer experience. Come to this session to learn what we have built for 7.1 to regain and surpass your previous developer productivity.

This presentation will cover:
- Target Platform
- Dependency management
- OSGi Resolver
- WatchTask
- IDE Plugins improvements (Eclipse and now Intelij)

As customers and users move towards accessing information on multiple devices, we must learn to adapt our applications to serve data across multiple platforms. Headless API acts as an enabler to multiply value creation, by turning your business or organization into a platform for others to develop upon. By opening your application to third party integrations and developers, you can watch your headless platform grow with a minimal amount of work.

In this session, our goal is to explain to Symposium attendees:
What - Headless CMS is
Why - Clients/Customers need to pay attention to Headless CMS
How - To implement Headless CMS with Liferay using Service Builder, JAX-RS, and Oauth2.0

Upgrading Code to Liferay 7.1

David Nebinger Lead Consultant Liferay

Session Summary

In this session Dave will cover general considerations for upgrading to Liferay DXP 7.1, with a particular focus on upgrading custom code from 7.0 to 7.1.

With minor architectural changes between the versions, upgrades from Liferay DXP 7.0 to 7.1 should be much easier to execute than upgrades from 6.x to 7.0. However, customers who written custom code will need to make some changes to be able to deploy that code to 7.1.

David will also discuss upgrade strategies for Liferay 6.x custom code.

Finally, David will cover other general upgrade considerations, including the Bootstrap compatibility layer that was developed to minimize potential issues that may arise for customers who built custom interfaces in Liferay DXP 7.0 using Bootstrap 3.
