The Liferay Marketplace is an exciting new hub for sharing, browsing and downloading Liferay-compatible applications. As enterprises look for ways to build and enhance their existing platforms, developers and software vendors are searching for new avenues to reach this market. Marketplace leverages the entire Liferay ecosystem to release and share apps in a user-friendly, one-stop site.

This forum and its subcategories have been created for the benefit of the Liferay Community, to hold discussions, get questions answered, and generally interact with other Marketplace users and developers. More information about the Liferay Marketplace can be found on the Marketplace site at http://liferay.com/marketplace.

Note that as of September 2011, the Liferay Marketplace is not yet available (it is dependent on the release of Liferay 6.1), and as such, information regarding the details of implementation may change.

This forum exists for the benefit of the entire Liferay Community, as it relates to the Liferay Marketplace. Standard forum rules apply, so please read the forum FAQ before posting here!

Make sure to subscribe to the announcements category to get late-breaking news about the Marketplace. Welcome to the Marketplace!

It is available in the svn trunk or nightly releases?
If not, do we have to wait until the "official" 6.1 release?

Does EE Certification implicitly imply that the software or service may not work on CE? Is it possible to get a refund if it doesn't work?
Something like at Amazon where customers can rate and comment on sellers would be a nice feature to have.emoticon

There are two sides to Marketplace - the part that lives on liferay.com (the server side, if you will), and the part that allows access to it from within the product, i.e. Control Panel(the client side). The components that allow access via Control Panel will make its way into trunk between now and the 6.1 GA - probably in the next 3-4 weeks but that's just a guess.

The model will be that you pay a flat payment for EE certification, which is good for the entire lifetime of that EE release. The amount you have to pay for EE cert has not yet been determined.

There will never be a strict definition of appropriate. Obvious things that would not be allowed include porn, or apps that invade privacy, or are otherwise malicious in intent. Ratings and comments can also help users decide whether an app is worth the download and/or purchase.

No, EE Certification does not imply that it may not work on CE. It only certifies that it is guaranteed to work on EE. We (Liferay) are not validating apps against CE, so there would be no refund if it did not work on CE. However, unless the author is explicitly depending on some EE-only feature, it is in their best interest to ensure it works on CE also. They will also be able to explicitly declare whether an app is supported against CE or not.

Hey Richard, we've pushed the date back to April of this year - due to the complexities in launching a marketplace, it is taking longer than expected and we don't want to open it up without the right set of features for our enterprise customers.

Hi James,

I am using Liferay 6.1 EE GA version but not able to find any tab related to Marketplace.
Neither it is available at www.liferay.com/marketplace . Could you please let me know when will it be available .
Also, is there any way I can get Audit portlet and Audit Hook to use "Audit Trails" functionality of liferay 6.1 EE.

Thanks,
Himanshu Modi

Hi Himanshu,

At present, the Liferay Marketplace is not "open for business" yet so you won't see any tabs in the product, nor the ability to upload or download via liferay.com/marketplace. We anticipate having it open later this year.

As far as the Audit functionality, you can download the audit hook and portlet from the customer portal (assuming you are an EE customer).

Guess it would be at the same time as 6.1.1 GA2: 25th May.

We are going to release 6.1 CE GA2, SO 2.0, and Marketplace all or about the same day, and they have some interdependencies, so it's a bit like "herding cats" as they say emoticon But yeah, it will be on or about May 25, possibly a bit later, but we're working as hard as we can to make things go smoothly, and your patience, as always, is much appreciated!

Hi James,

Do you have some API for the app to check if it was purchased, and when ? Just like in-app purchase on iOS and android ?

Thanks for answering,
Philippe

Hey Philippe - no, we don't currently have an in-app purchase API - however, the in-built licensing scheme will take care of provisioning and checking license validity, once the e-commerce functionality is done. This is not expected to be in the first public release of Marketplace.

Thanks James for answering.

Can you please develop your answer ? What do you mean by "in-built licensing scheme" ?
Is it possible to think about some freemium mecanism, using Liferay MarketPlace ? The same app for free with limited functionalities, and with full features if licensed ?

Initially, there will be no Marketplace API that apps could use to automatically "upgrade" their license. What you would instead do is have a "Lite/Free" version of your app, and a "Paid" version (similar to how it's done on Apple's appstore and other appstores). The "in-built licensing scheme" refers to the mechanism you will use to sell software on the Marketplace. Users will have to purchase a license at the time of download, and Liferay will check to make sure a valid license has been purchased before the software will work. You can sell licenses on a per-user or per-server basis, or an unlimited number of servers/users. And you can set the price for each option.

So I can imagine a "Lite" version (free), and another "Big" version with all bells and whistles (paid) ?
And without doing anything (in the code), the "big" version would work only if the server (or user) has an effective license...

Is there any kind of internal checking in the case of the "Lite" version, even if it's free ?
