The Liferay Marketplace is an exciting new hub for sharing, browsing and downloading Liferay-compatible applications. As enterprises look for ways to build and enhance their existing platforms, developers and software vendors are searching for new avenues to reach this market. Marketplace leverages the entire Liferay ecosystem to release and share apps in a user-friendly, one-stop site.

This forum and its subcategories have been created for the benefit of the Liferay Community, to hold discussions, get questions answered, and generally interact with other Marketplace users and developers. More information about the Liferay Marketplace can be found on the Marketplace site at http://liferay.com/marketplace.

Note that as of September 2011, the Liferay Marketplace is not yet available (it is dependent on the release of Liferay 6.1), and as such, information regarding the details of implementation may change.

This forum exists for the benefit of the entire Liferay Community, as it relates to the Liferay Marketplace. Standard forum rules apply, so please read the forum FAQ before posting here!

It is available in the svn trunk or nightly releases?
If not, do we have to wait until the "official" 6.1 release?

I just went over some of the pages and have some questions

What is the pricing model for EE certification ?
Could you define "appropriate" ? (will brian chan allow a "the god delusion" portlet ?)

Does EE Certification implicitly imply that the software or service may not work on CE? Is it possible to get a refund if it doesn't work?
Something like at Amazon where customers can rate and comment on sellers would be a nice feature to have.emoticon

There are two sides to Marketplace - the part that lives on liferay.com (the server side, if you will), and the part that allows access to it from within the product, i.e. Control Panel(the client side). The components that allow access via Control Panel will make its way into trunk between now and the 6.1 GA - probably in the next 3-4 weeks but that's just a guess.

The model will be that you pay a flat payment for EE certification, which is good for the entire lifetime of that EE release. The amount you have to pay for EE cert has not yet been determined.

There will never be a strict definition of appropriate. Obvious things that would not be allowed include porn, or apps that invade privacy, or are otherwise malicious in intent. Ratings and comments can also help users decide whether an app is worth the download and/or purchase.

No, EE Certification does not imply that it may not work on CE. It only certifies that it is guaranteed to work on EE. We (Liferay) are not validating apps against CE, so there would be no refund if it did not work on CE. However, unless the author is explicitly depending on some EE-only feature, it is in their best interest to ensure it works on CE also. They will also be able to explicitly declare whether an app is supported against CE or not.

Hey Richard, we've pushed the date back to April of this year - due to the complexities in launching a marketplace, it is taking longer than expected and we don't want to open it up without the right set of features for our enterprise customers.

Hi James,

I am using Liferay 6.1 EE GA version but not able to find any tab related to Marketplace.
Neither it is available at www.liferay.com/marketplace . Could you please let me know when will it be available .
Also, is there any way I can get Audit portlet and Audit Hook to use "Audit Trails" functionality of liferay 6.1 EE.

Thanks,

Hi Himanshu,

At present, the Liferay Marketplace is not "open for business" yet so you won't see any tabs in the product, nor the ability to upload or download via liferay.com/marketplace. We anticipate having it open later this year.

As far as the Audit functionality, you can download the audit hook and portlet from the customer portal (assuming you are an EE customer).

We are going to release 6.1 CE GA2, SO 2.0, and Marketplace all or about the same day, and they have some interdependencies, so it's a bit like "herding cats" as they say emoticon But yeah, it will be on or about May 25, possibly a bit later, but we're working as hard as we can to make things go smoothly, and your patience, as always, is much appreciated!

Hi James,

Do you have some API for the app to check if it was purchased, and when ? Just like in-app purchase on iOS and android ?

Thanks for answering,

Hey Philippe - no, we don't currently have an in-app purchase API - however, the in-built licensing scheme will take care of provisioning and checking license validity, once the e-commerce functionality is done. This is not expected to be in the first public release of Marketplace.

Thanks James for answering.

Can you please develop your answer ? What do you mean by "in-built licensing scheme" ?
Is it possible to think about some freemium mecanism, using Liferay MarketPlace ? The same app for free with limited functionalities, and with full features if licensed ?

Initially, there will be no Marketplace API that apps could use to automatically "upgrade" their license. What you would instead do is have a "Lite/Free" version of your app, and a "Paid" version (similar to how it's done on Apple's appstore and other appstores). The "in-built licensing scheme" refers to the mechanism you will use to sell software on the Marketplace. Users will have to purchase a license at the time of download, and Liferay will check to make sure a valid license has been purchased before the software will work. You can sell licenses on a per-user or per-server basis, or an unlimited number of servers/users. And you can set the price for each option.

So I can imagine a "Lite" version (free), and another "Big" version with all bells and whistles (paid) ?
And without doing anything (in the code), the "big" version would work only if the server (or user) has an effective license...

Is there any kind of internal checking in the case of the "Lite" version, even if it's free ?

Hi,

I recently upgraded from 6.1 to 6.2 EE , Iam trying to deploy all my application related custom portlets manually, Iam getting the below mentioned issue during my deployment process

"Not updating Marketplace because version 6.2.10.1-ee-ga1 is newer than version 6.2.0.1"

Market Place portlet was not getting deployed , my concern is due to this issue none of my application related WARS(portlets) are not getting deployed. I tried to download the latest EE plugin for Market Place portlet from the below URL , but the link was broken so I cannot download the latest WAR file

https://www.liferay.com/marketplace/download

https://www.liferay.com/group/customer/downloads?p_p_id=3_WAR_osbportlet&p_p_lifecycle=1&p_p_state=maximized&_3_WAR_osbportlet_fileName=/plugins/6.2.10/marketplace-portlet-6.2.10.3.war

Please help me in the following areas :

1. Is there any way I can disable/avoid the deployment of Market place portlet ?
2. If I don't have option to disable the 'Marketplace Portlet' , can someone please provide me the link to download the latest WAR file for the 'Marketplace Portlet' (marketplace-portlet-6.2.10.3.war) ?

What app container are you using?

Recently I ran into an issue with weblogic where Liferay had tried to push out an initial version of marketplace (in my case 6.2.0.3) but we had a newer one installed.

Weblogic was stuck in a loop because it was set up in a managed node cluster configuration and individual nodes could not deploy a plugin, so it was sitting in WL and waiting for autodeploy to complete but never would, resulting in that message getting reported over and over.

Do a search on your app containers and try to find a war file for marketplace waiting to get deployed and delete it.

David,

Thank you for the response , We are using tomcat container that comes with Liferay 6.2 EE (tomcat 7.0.42) . We are planning to upgrade our liferay version from 6.1 to 6.2 , so I tried to install and deploy in Dev Server box (which is not a clustered environment - just a single server) .

Problem is I couldn't able to find the latest version for Market Place Portlet above 6.2.10.1 , because the latest download Market Place WAR file link provided by the liferay was broken. Also looks like we don't have option to disable the 'Market Place Portlet' in liferay 6.2 version. Iam stuck and not able to deploy my application related portlets because of this issue.

Please let me know the options to proceed further , I tried to research and was getting the response to upgrade it to latest version by deploying the latest Market Place WAR file which I couldn't download unfortunately emoticon

Eh, my issue was that I wasn't logged in with the right credentials. If I use an account that is not tied to an EE authorized account, I get a big red box with a "not found" error message.

Hi All,

Iam able to download the latest "Marketplace" war file and successfully deployed the portlet. Thanks Everyone.

But the strange behavior is if we manually deploy the marketplace portlet with the custom portlets all the portlets gets deployed with no issues.
But if you go and redeploy portlets or restart the server then the custom portlets requires to be redeployed again. The fix we are looking for is to make sure the server restart and other deployments doesn’t require existing portlets to be redeployed due to marketplace portlet dependency.

Again I need to redeploy all my custom portlets during the server restart , can some one please throw some light on this issue. It will be really great , if someone guide me to remove the market portlet dependency or to overcome this peculiar issue?.

Eh, you cannot remove the dependency. Any plugin built using either the SDK or the Maven artifacts ends up with a marketplace dependency. Why, I just don't know and it really doesn't make any sense to me (although the reason may be quite sensible, I just don't know).

Instead, perhaps we can look at the issue you're having...

So with marketplace installed now, if you deploy a custom plugin it works just fine. But after a system restart, you find you have to deploy again, is that right? And if so, how do you know it's due to the marketplace? Also, how do you know the redeploy is necessary?

- Yes Correct

[quoteBut after a system restart, you find you have to deploy again, is that right?] - Yes

And if so, how do you know it's due to the marketplace? Also, how do you know the redeploy is necessary?

Let me provide more insight about my problem :

Consider I have 3 custom portlets plugins (A-layout.WAR / A-themes.WAR / A-portlets.WAR) and MarketPlacePortlet.WAR

Step 1 : Deploying all the WARS manually (placing under the deploy folder) and started the server - Everything gets deployed and able to see the deployed themes/ layouts / A-portlets

Step 2 : Now Iam restarting the server , Iam not redeploying anything. The plugins which was already registered (A-layout.WAR / A-themes.WAR / A-portlets.WAR) gets undeployed automatically and Iam not able see the portlets after launching the URL

Step 3: I tried deploying all the portlets individually/alone or deployed all the three WARS (A-layout.WAR / A-themes.WAR / A-portlets.WAR) through hot deployment mode but no luck nothing gets deployed

Step 4: Now Iam deploying the Market Place portlet along with the other three portlets (A-layout.WAR / A-themes.WAR / A-portlets.WAR) , everything gets deployed successfully and Iam able to see the layouts / themes / custom portlets. thats the reason I was mentioning that it got dependency with 'MarketPlace Portlet'

Please let me know if you need more details.

Definitely weird. Nothing 'automatically undeploys' plugins. In fact, Liferay does not have any kind of undeploy logic in it; it will clean up if it gets notified of an undeployment i.e. you delete the webapp folder, but that's it. That's only in response to the app container notifying of the undeployed app, but Liferay isn't doing any undeploying.

So some other questions, what version of Liferay are you using and which app server?

Which service pack? If earlier than SP8 or 9, can you try using the latest SP and see what the result is?

Currently Iam using the service pack 8 , do you want me to try with Sp9 ?.

I need to add one more point here , This is not happening in local environment and its happening only in upper environment (Dev box / QA..). The difference is , in local environment I have freshly installed 6.2 and deployed everything with the new schema (all portal datas gets saved during the server startup). In higher environment, Iam upgrading from 6.1 to 6.2 (not as a freshly installed using the new schema version)

Seems there is no such issue with marketplace portlet,
Your redeployment has fixed it.
You may try with just redeployment or cleaning work and temp once.

Thank you everyone. We are not able to replicate the issue in higher environment , we closed the jira as it was happening only in DEV emoticon
