there are many blogs and wiki releted to this you can find on community or google for IPC.
I added some links here:
http://www.liferay.com/community/wiki/-/wiki/Main/Inter-portlet+communication

For JSF portlet u can go to JSF topic on this page.

I would recommend that you check out the following configurable keys from portal.properties that you can override in portal-ext.properties:

 1    #
2    # Set this property to specify how events are distributed. If the value is
3    # "layout-set", then events will be distributed to all portlets contained in
4    # a layout set. If the value is "layout", then events will be distributed to
5    # all portlets that are present in a layout.
 6    #
 7    portlet.event.distribution=layout
 8
 9    #
10    # Set this property to specify how public render parameters are distributed.
11    # If the value is "layout-set", then public render parameters will be
12    # distributed to all portlets contained in a layout set. This will only work
13    # correctly if the property "layout.default.p_l_reset" is set to false. If
14    # the value is "layout", then public render parameters will be distributed
15    # to all portlets that are present in a layout.
16    #
17    portlet.public.render.parameter.distribution=layout

Any configuration you change here would apply to any portlet framework (JSF or other) that can take advantage of Portlet 2.0 Events IPC or Portlet 2.0 Public Render Parameters IPC. Here are some demos that might be helpful:
