I might be a little confused...

I have succesfully setup the RAD IDE with the portal source code. Now I want to be able start it and debug. Is it as simple as following these instructions?

http://content.liferay.com/4.0.0/docs/developers/ch02s01.html#d0e2029

Any help would be appreciated.

No responses so let me try again.

I've been using the Liferay/Tomcat binary bundle and then pointing a RAD workspace to the actual portal source code. From RAD I can see all of the ANT tasks, have built the /ext environment, and can ant deploy from there to Tomcat and see my changes.

I've entertained using Eclipse with the recommended developers setup using subversion, orion, jikes but ultimately its going to need to live under RAD.

The question now is how can I go about debugging with RAD using my current setup? I want to set a breakpoint in the code somewhere, how do I do that since I didn't start Tomcat from RAD? Do I need a completely different comfiguration than the one I have?

Has anyone done any Liferay development using RAD successfuly?

Thanks.

Rajiv,

Thanks for the suggestion, but RAD is all I can use at this point.

What I really need to know is how to set up RAD as the development environment so I can debug.

Thanks.

I have it working in RAD using Tomcat. Since RAD, and our installation base, caters to Websphere it is not an optimal solution. Also, it feels a little kludgy to me.

I'm going to attempt to get it working with the RAD/Websphere combination, I just wanted to do it carefully so as not to break the /ext environment.

Any hints on both combinations would be welcome.

I think I would go for tomcat because firing up a WAS test server takes for ever. I suppose with liferay even longer ;)

thanks in advance

I haven't any formal documentation yet, I will try and work on that.

Start here: http://content.liferay.com/4.0.0/docs/quickstart/ch04s01.html

Follow the instructions, the ant plugin for eclipse helps since RAD doesn't come equiped with it. You don't need jikes, javac works fine for this excercise.

I'm not using Sysdeo though I've had success with it under Eclipse. I'm trying to keep as close to the standard RAD install as I can.

See if you can get the /ext environment built using RAD. When you can you should be able start Liferay from the command line and surf to the Welcome page. Once you can some tweaking will be required to get it to start from RAD.

Let me know how you progress.
