Artificial Intelligence and Effective Learning in Industry 4.0

Transform your productivity with AI-powered learning.

Think back to when modern, digital technology didn’t exist. How did we do our jobs?

People would go to work, do the same thing every day, and if they built up enough experience, they would be promoted and continue doing the work in the same way they’ve always done it.

Digital transformation has changed everything about work. The move to cyber-physical systems, known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution or Industry 4.0, can be seen as a risk or a possibility; much digital ink has been spent on whether our current education systems can keep up with the new skills workers need to stay relevant in this new environment.

During a session on applying artificial intelligence to digital learning, Mika Kuikka, President of Valamis, discussed how AI can be applied to help workers with this transformation. “Using AI in learning systems will increase the productivity and quality of work, while increasing profits for companies,” said Kuikka. He explained that, as companies like Microsoft release AI toolkits to the world, AI will continue to be more accessible and thus more adopted by companies.

Emerging Technologies That Are Driving Change

As technologies such as intelligent automation, process automation robots and digital assistants gain maturity, they will come together with artificial intelligence to manage and automate the way they work together. Most companies already have something like a customer service bot on their websites to answer the bulk of questions from customers. At Valamis, they’re looking forward to how applying this technology can make learning more personal and more intuitive to users, in order to help them keep up with the changes of Industry 4.0.

Kuikka named three steps that companies need to take:

  1. Find the skill gaps. What are the things your team needs to learn to manage the next change that’s coming?
  2. Define and implement a learning strategy and hiring plan. You need to keep your workforce up to date to keep your company as productive as possible.
  3. Leverage modern technologies. Bringing in emerging technologies is the only way to keep up with digital transformation.

“By using AI support and natural language interfaces, you will bring learning closer to people,” said Kuikka. Modern Learning Experience Platforms allow companies to deliver omnichannel learning to employees, from mobile to a company Slack channel.

A key part of this is centralizing the knowledge that your company has already produced, so that it can be made discoverable by the learning management platform you use. Data and knowledge can only be useful if it is accessible at the moment that people need it. By including information that exists inside and outside of current learning systems, companies can deliver more effective training to their teams.

“By creating a learning strategy and leveraging modern learning technology, we can manage the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” Kuikka concluded.
