Liferay Introduces Liferay Sync with Powerful Document-Sharing Abilities

Liferay Sync synchronizes content across mobile, desktop, and web

LOS ANGELES — (February 1, 2012) — Liferay, Inc., provider of the world’s leading enterprise-class open source portal, announced today the availability of Liferay Sync, a powerful document-sharing add-on to the Community Edition (CE) of Liferay Portal 6.1. Liferay Sync transforms the Liferay platform into a central, easy-to-use document sharing service.

With Liferay Sync, users now have the ability to access documents stored within a Liferay instance from their mobile devices and desktops. Documents can be dragged and dropped into a synchronized folder and then be edited, moved, or deleted. Sync automatically takes care of revision management.

A key benefit for Liferay users is access to documents offline; the documents synchronize when users are back online. A single user can make a change to a document on their desktop, which is then synchronized with the central server and updated for all other users who share that folder.  In these ways, Liferay Portal becomes a central repository for documents, opening up new avenues of collaboration for a distributed group of users.

"Liferay Sync was designed to combine the benefits of a web application with the user interaction benefits of a desktop or mobile application," said Edwin Chung, Liferay's VP of Product Management. "The web allows centralized data and group access, and the desktop provides a rich way to search, access and manipulate documents.  But while Office Web Apps and Google Docs require you to store a copy on the server and edit documents in a browser, Liferay Sync allows users to leverage any desktop or mobile office package, such as MS Office, OpenOffice, iWork, or Photoshop, to edit and save documents locally while either online or offline.”

“The launch of Liferay Sync is an exciting and significant product release for our company,” said Brian Chan, Liferay’s founder and Chief Software Architect. “The ability to combine desktop and mobile interfaces with a web service takes the Liferay experience to new heights of simplicity and enrichment for our end users.”

Starting today with the beta form of Liferay Sync, Liferay Portal CE users can synchronize their documents within one Liferay Site. A coming edition of Liferay Sync for Liferay Portal Enterprise Edition (EE) will allow users to share documents across an unlimited number of Liferay Sites on one installation. Liferay Sync is compatible with Windows, Mac OS, and iOS.

January 24, 2012 By Alice Cheng

Liferay Announces Rapid Community Growth in 2011

Liferay Sync, Liferay Portal 6.1 EE set to launch with strong open-source community momentum

LOS ANGELES — (January 24, 2012) — Liferay, Inc., provider of the world’s leading enterprise-class open source portal, announced today the expansion of its community to 56,000 members in 2011, a nearly 40 percent increase over the previous year. The participation of the Liferay community continues to strengthen the portal provider's offerings, including the new Liferay Sync and Liferay Portal 6.1 Enterprise Edition, both planned for release later this quarter.

Liferay’s community saw an average growth of 1,300 members per month in 2011, with increased contributions to forums, wiki posts, blogs, code contributions and activity in special projects teams.  Forum posts, which represent the amount of online knowledge and online community support for questions, rose 25 percent, while the number of new members who are contributing to posts grew 10 percent and the number of posts quantified as useful by the original poster of the question increased by over 125 percent.

“Liferay’s commitment to community and open source development has been apparent in the healthy growth and enthusiasm of our community members,” said James Falkner, Liferay’s Community Manager. “Last year, our renewed emphasis on our worldwide community led to the creation of new programs, such as the BugSquad and Liferay Community Leadership, aimed to engage, equip and help coordinate all the great people and ideas that feed our open-source, open-community dialogue.”

The creation last year of the BugSquad led to important contributions from the community, through usability testing and functional bug finding, for a major product release—Liferay Portal 6.1 CE. Liferay also started the Liferay Community Leadership program as a means to identify leaders and strengthen contributions from the community through improved organization and structure. Last year also saw the addition of 18 new User Groups, regional grassroots organizations for the global Liferay community.

Strong momentum in the Liferay community is in place for new 2012 initiatives, including Liferay Community Projects, Community Blog Stream, Developer Contests and the upcoming Liferay University. In addition, Liferay is set for major product launches this quarter including powerful file-sharing technology Liferay Sync and the latest version of the company’s flagship product, Liferay Portal 6.1 EE.

PRESS RELEASE: Liferay Announces Support for New WCM Standard Initiative

December 20, 2011 By Alice Cheng

Liferay Announces Support for New WCM Standard Initiative

Enterprise portal provider moves to strengthen interoperability in content management space

LOS ANGELES — (December 20, 2011) — Liferay, Inc., provider of the world’s leading enterprise-class open source portal, announced its support of a new open standard initiative aimed at improving the presentation and interoperability of content across WCM systems. As a rich content publishing platform, Liferay maintains a leadership role in pushing for standards that will help end users attain long-term benefits from their investments in Liferay products.

The new initiative, Web Experience Management Interoperability (WEMI), represents an evolution in WCM and is set to increase interoperability between WCM vendors, thereby driving down costs of web content integration and publishing. Formed through the standards organization OASIS, of which Liferay is a longtime Sponsor member, WEMI will allow for interoperability in the delivery of web content. Existing standards only address content interoperability at the lower data level, which forces customers to implement costly customized solutions at the content presentation layer.

"Liferay fully supports the OASIS WEMI Charter. We see immense benefits to improving the interoperability of WCM systems and enabling rich content consumption on modern web experience platforms," said James Falkner, Liferay’s Community Manager.

Liferay’s commitment to remain on the cutting edge of emerging technology developments has led to the adoption of forward-thinking industry standards in Liferay Portal such as CMIS, WebDAV and JCR.  WEMI further supports Liferay’s vision of an open, heterogeneous, yet deeply interconnected web platform, allowing Liferay to serve as a modern WCM system, a social collaboration site, or many other uses in today’s web-powered environments.

In addition to benefiting end users, extensibility of WEMI will allow Liferay partners to reuse solutions for multiple clients and become domain experts without learning multiple technologies, saving them time and money.

Liferay is committed to supporting WEMI in a future Liferay release. WEMI is in the process of forming its Technical Committee and will have its initial meeting in January 2012.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB -- Liferay, Inc., provider of the world’s leading enterprise-class open source portal, today announced it has been positioned by Gartner, Inc. in the “Leaders” quadrant of the Magic Quadrant for Horizontal Portals. Gartner, a leading information technology research and advisory company, placed Liferay in the Leaders quadrant based on completeness of vision and ability to execute on that vision. Liferay was one of five portal providers included in the Leaders quadrant. Download the full report here or follow the link from http://www.liferay.com/about-us/awards.

“The Leaders in this Magic Quadrant have a full range of capabilities to support a variety of portal deployment scenarios, and have demonstrated consistent product delivery in meeting customer needs for a substantial period of time,” wrote Gartner analyst Jim Murphy in the Magic Quadrant for Horizontal Portals report. “Leaders have delivered significant product innovation over the course of their pursuit of portal customers, and have been successful in selling to new customers across industries.”
